Troubled Teen Assessment
Parents often notice changes in a daughter’s behavior and attitudes in the teen years. As a teen’s frontal lobe of the brain develops, this affects their emotions and how they make decisions. Teens also experience physical hormonal changes, and you may find it hard to know what’s normal, and what’s not.
When teens struggle during this time, you want to do everything you can as a good parent to help your teen. But what kind of help does she need? What are your best options? How quickly can you find the best help near you? Should you consider placing your teen in a therapeutic school, or can you book sessions with a professional counselor nearby? What if he or she has a serious psychological issue that needs immediate psychiatric or medical help?
To help you make the correct parental decisions, and rate the risk level of your teen’s behavior, we’ve created the Troubled Teen Risk Assessment. Simply read through this list of behaviors, and check off any that describe your teen’s recent actions, attitude, and choices.
Check each box that describes the significant behavior changes that you’ve seen recently in your girl:
If you have only 1 or 2 boxes checked, then you look into outpatient counseling for your teen and family. If you checked 7+ boxes, you should consider placing your teen in an inpatient therapeutic program or therapeutic school where she can learn from therapists who can identify the sources of these behaviors, and help your teen make new thinking and behaving a habit.
If you’ve checked any boxes with an *, your teen may have a serious psychological issue that needs immediate psychiatric or medical help. Remember, extreme changes in behavior truly require your involvement – so, please consult professional help as soon as possible. If your teen shows signs of suicide, depression, cutting, eating disorders, illegal drug use, arson, threats to family or community, black-out memory loss, violent thoughts/actions, threats with weapons, cruelty to animals/pets, gang involvement, running away from home… please consult professional help as soon as possible.
*Notice! – This short assessment is not a medical or psychological diagnosis. The assessment is only meant to be a helpful, limited guide for parents with troubled teenager. Please consult professional help for next steps with your child.
